Nor Hamizan Noor Hadi, M.D, M.Ortho
Orthopedic Surgeon
Kuala Lumpur Hospital – Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
I did my fellowship in the Trauma Reconstruction Center at Shin Yurigaoka General Hospital for 6 months starting at the end of July 2025 till the end of January 2026. I can say it has been one of the best experiences in my career or even in my life.
Joining the fellowship in this center offers the opportunity to see various trauma cases from simple to even complex cases such as polytrauma cases, severe open fractures, pelvic and acetabular fractures, fractures with bone & soft tissue defects and even post-operative complications like malunion or non-union, osteomyelitis, etc.
As a surgeon who is very much interested in pelvic and acetabulum trauma, I was very lucky to have the chance to observe and assist Prof. Sawaguchi in managing a variety of such cases in the 6months I was there. I was exposed to different types of approaches, techniques and methods of fixation. Whenever there was a pelvic or acetabular trauma case, it truly made my day over there.
It was also interesting to see how the team handles general trauma cases. Every surgeon has their own tips and tricks on how to tackle different cases. I appreciate that they had let me join in on their surgeries and share their personal methods in doing these cases. I think it has open up my mind on different ways to handle general trauma cases in the future.
Another highlight of the fellowship was joining the limb reconstruction surgeries. Prof. Matsushita and Prof. Okazaki definitely has years of experience and wisdom when it comes to bone reconstruction or deformity correction using various types of external fixators like Ilizarov apparatus, monorails or the standard simple external fixators. I think Prof. Matsushita’s chipping technique is a good arsenal to have when tackling problems to achieve bone union.
The Orthoplastic services led by Prof. Kudo and assisted by Dr Sano, in my view, are also one of the gamechangers in that center. With their help, limb reconstruction is on a different level than what I have ever seen before. It was admiring to see their dedication with many long operating hours to salvage and reconstruct a limb where I believe some places would have already considered the option of amputation. It was amazing to see a limb reconstructed not just for function but as aesthetically as possible as well.
The fellowship is not just about being in the operating room but there are educational sessions as well. Certain days there will be presentations on certain topics during the morning conference by the doctors and there are times the Professors will do lecture sessions. I am grateful that Prof. Matsushita, Prof. Sawaguchi, Prof Minehara and Prof Kudo have taken their time to give a special lecture to us international fellows.
As a practicing Trauma surgeon, I can say that the Trauma Reconstruction Center at Shin Yurigaoka General Hospital is one of the best examples of a Trauma Center in the world. Not just having a great line of surgeons but amazing supporting staff as well. I think the anesthesiologist team was always on the same wavelength to make the surgery as smooth as possible. The ORPs were very helpful during surgeries. The physiotherapists were always in the ward dedicated to rehabilitating the patients post operatively. I would recommend to anyone who is into orthopedic trauma surgery to come see and experience this center.
It truly was a humbling experience doing the fellowship over there. I appreciate the opportunity given to experience the country and the culture as well. I would like to express my gratitude to all the Professors and Doctors of the Trauma Reconstruction Center at Shin Yurigaoka General Hospital. Thank you for the opportunity, your endless help and kindness. May God bless you all. Hope to see you all again in the near future.
とても良い経験になりました。大変お世話になりました。本当にありがとうございました。
