Le Cong Danh, MD
Can Tho Central General Hospital, Vietnam
I completed a two-month clinical fellowship at the Trauma Reconstruction Center of Shin-Yurigaoka General Hospital from November to December 2025. This fellowship provided focused training in fracture management and trauma reconstruction in a well-organized orthopedic trauma center.
I was warmly welcomed by the faculty and staff, which helped me adapt quickly to daily clinical practice. Despite language barriers, the professors and colleagues demonstrated strong dedication to teaching and clinical guidance, creating a supportive learning environment.
During the fellowship, I observed and assisted in a broad spectrum of orthopedic trauma cases, ranging from common extremity fractures to complex conditions such as severe open fractures, pelvic and acetabular fractures, complex intra-articular fractures, bone defects, and post-traumatic deformities. I gained experience in treatment planning and surgical decision-making, external fixation techniques, including the Ilizarov method, and fundamental principles of bone and soft-tissue reconstruction.
A major strength of the program was its structured approach to preoperative planning and surgical strategy. Each case was managed with clear objectives and evidence-based methods, which improved my understanding of complex fracture care.
I had the opportunity to learn from Professors Sawaguchi, Minehara, and Kudo through clinical discussions and lectures on tibial plateau fractures, distal femoral fractures, hip fractures, the Masquelet technique, management of bone loss, post-traumatic deformity correction, and pelvic–acetabular fractures in elderly patients. The lecture on microsurgical flap reconstruction by Professor Kudo was particularly valuable.
Shin-Yurigaoka General Hospital is located near Shin-Yurigaoka Station, with convenient access to central Tokyo in about 45 minutes by train. This allowed me to balance clinical training with opportunities to experience Japanese cuisine and culture.
This fellowship strengthened my clinical judgment and provided insight into the Japanese healthcare system, particularly interdisciplinary collaboration and patient-centered care.
I sincerely thank Professor Sawaguchi and all members of the Trauma Reconstruction Center for their guidance and support. This experience will have a lasting impact on my clinical practice.
