My journey in Japan as a fellow in Trauma and Reconstruction at Shin Yurigaoka General Hospital was nothing short of exceptional.

If I were to describe it, I have to break it down to different stages.

THE EXPECTATION

The moment Professor Sawaguchi accepted me as a fellow; I had an expectation that there will be a new door of opportunity to learn from the best and different exceptional surgeons. The other expectations I had were the difficulty in communicating in Nihonggo since I had a hard time learning it and lastly, I was really looking forward to the Japan culture I will experience.

FIRST IMPRESSION

The moment I entered the conference room for the morning conference and the operating room, I was in awe not because of the technology or top of the line equipments and implants but because of the efficiency and disposition of everyone. Everyone has a role to play and it did not matter if it is inside or outside the operating room, everyone was doing their best. As you walk around the hospital you will receive a greeting from someone you do not know and yet you will feel the sincerity when they say it and take a bow, 'Otsukaresama desu'. Every beginning of surgery there was a light feeling in the air because everyone was expected to work well together and say to each other 'Yoroshiku Onegaishimasu'. These simple phrases I hear every day always had a weight in it, and everyone really did their best and worked well together.

ALL of the trauma surgeons were really good and they are very kind to us international fellows. The difference in dialect did not hinder them to share what they know to us, just like in sports, you do not need the same language to show your skill, you just have to play the game and everyone can understand each other.

LONG LASTING IMPRESSION

Five months of training went by so fast. The expectations I had were exceeded by a large margin. The trauma surgeons of Shin Yurigaoka General hospital really showed the 'Japanese Hospitality' and I really appreciate all their efforts in sharing their knowledge and skills in their respective specializations. I can truly say that this was one of the most memorable experiences of my life to be in Japan to learn and experience the culture. I will never forget all of the learnings, the food, the scenery, the peaceful quiet walk in the streets/parks, and most especially the people of Shin Yurigaoka General Hospital. I realized something during my stay in this hospital, it was the best environment to learn and to be an excellent surgeon because everyone was really exceptional.

I will miss saying 'Sebastian desu' during time out. Let me end by saying 'Honto ni Arigatogozaimashita'
