My career with high-precision radiotherapy started just same as when Japanese stereotactic radiosurgery began. The first Leksell Gamma Knife unit (ELEKTA) was installed for practical clinical use in Japan at Komaki City Hospital (Komaki, Aichi, Japan) in May 1991, only one-year delay from the investigating installation of Gamma Knife at Tokyo University Hospital in 1990. Since then I have been much affected by stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) enabling lesion ablation without a surgical knife though it is precise like microsurgery.

I am originally a Japanese board-certified neurosurgeon and later became a Japanese board-certified radiation oncologist, too. Fortunately, I have got chances to use various radiotherapy modalities both for the brain and for the whole body. At Komaki City Hospital we treated thousands of patients harboring brain tumors, vascular disorders, and functional diseases under the direction of Dr. Tatsuya Kobayashi and Dr. Yoshihisa Kida. We continue a good relationship with Pittsburgh Gamma Knife group, Dr. L. Dade Lunsford, Dr. Douglas Kondziolka, Dr. John C. Flickinger, and so on. I had an opportunity to study Gamma Knife radiosurgery at Center for Image-Guided Neurosurgery, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (PGH, PA, USA) for two years from April 1996 through March 1998. Even now we sometimes have a hot discussion on indication and treatment optimization with Gamma Knife radiosurgery at some international meetings.

At Nagoya Radiosurgery Center, Nagoya Kyoritsu Hospital (Kaikou-Kai Medical Group, Nagoya, Japan) we realized a good collaboration not only with Department of Neurosurgery, Nagoya University but also with Department of Radiology and Radiation Oncology, Nagoya City University where Professor Yuta Shibamoto is Chairman. We successfully began stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) with Novalis (BrainLAB) for the whole body neoplasms, including lung cancers, liver cancers, and spinal tumors, as well as various brain disorders with Gamma Knife. Then I moved to Nagoya City University Hospital and later to Aichi Medical University Hospital (Nagakute, Aichi, Japan). I had an experience to use TomoTherapy at Nagoya City University Hospital. Around that time I also operated CyberKnife (Accuray) at Tsushima Municipal Hospital (Tsushima, Aichi, Japan) and at Aoyama General Hospital (Toyokawa, Aichi, Japan). I directed an opening of Radiotherapy Center of a brand-new hospital of Aichi Medical University equipped with TrueBeam STx (Varian) running volumetric-modulated arc therapy (VMAT), more sophisticated method of intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), for five years from May 2014 through July 2018.

My current position is Director, Center for Advanced IGRT, Shin-Yurigaoka General Hospital (Medical Group of Southern Tohoku Research Institute of Neurosurgery, Kawasaki, Kanagawa, Japan). We have CyberKnife and TrueBeam in this hospital. In addition , we have Proton-Beam Therapy, Southern Tohoku Proton Therapy Center (Koriyama, Fukushima, Japan) and Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) at Southern Tohoku BNCT Research Center (Koriyama, Fukushima, Japan). We serve the most optimal radiation therapy for cancer patients regarding their disease conditions using those excellent modalities.
